We believe creativity should take us places.

Story & Light isn't defined by four walls or a single address. We gather wherever creativity, curiosity, and community can happen—around tables, on city streets, in parks and galleries, over drinks, on day trips, and eventually, in places much farther from home.

Sometimes we come together to learn. Sometimes to make photographs. Sometimes to share our work, celebrate, explore somewhere new, or simply spend time with people who see the world a little like we do.

The place may change. The reason we gather doesn't.

We believe creativity is part of being human.

Story & Light Society began with photography, but it was never really meant to be only about photographs.

We believe creativity is part of being human. That making something, following your curiosity, or noticing beautiful light on an otherwise ordinary afternoon can change the way you experience your day—and sometimes, the way you experience yourself.

Art gives us somewhere to put the things we don't quite have words for. It can quiet the noise, wake us up when we've been going through the motions, and remind us to pay attention. Creativity isn't a cure for the hard parts of being human, but it can be a meaningful way through them.

And we believe we need other people.

So much of modern life happens alone, even when we're surrounded by people. Kids can spend an entire school day among hundreds of classmates and still struggle to find where they belong. Adults can move through work, parenting, and responsibilities without finding the people who really feel like their people.

We want Story & Light to be one small antidote to that.

A place where you can show up because you're curious about photography and leave having talked to someone you wouldn't otherwise have met. Where a kid who doesn't feel at home on a sports team might find a group walking around with cameras instead. Where adults can make things simply because making things feels good. Where families can experience something together.

A place to wander, talk, learn, laugh, notice, and create.

We believe in showing up.

The last several years changed the way we learn, work, create, and connect. Classes moved to screens. Meetings became Zoom calls. Communities became group chats. We can learn almost anything from anywhere—and there is something extraordinary about that.

But something can be lost when so much of life happens through a screen.

We miss being in rooms with other people. We miss wandering somewhere without an agenda. We miss conversations that happen because two people happened to be standing next to each other. We miss making things with our hands, going places together, and finding communities that exist beyond a feed.

Story & Light is intentionally in person.

We want to create reasons to leave the house. To pick up a camera. To walk somewhere. To notice what's around us. To sit around a table and talk about what we made. To spend an afternoon with people who share our curiosity. To go somewhere we've never been.

Because community isn't just having access to people.

It's being known by them.

And creativity doesn't always need another tutorial, course, or piece of content.

Sometimes it needs a place to happen.

That's what we want Story & Light Society to be.

We believe photography helps us see.

A camera asks us to pay attention.

To light. To people. To tiny details. To what's happening at the edge of the frame. To things we might otherwise walk right past.

Photography gives us an excuse to explore a neighborhood we've never walked through, start a conversation, get outside, travel somewhere unfamiliar, or stop for something everyone else passed by.

And when a group of people photograph the same place, something wonderful happens: no two people come back with exactly the same pictures.

We begin to see not only the world differently, but how differently each of us sees the world.

That's why Story & Light can take so many forms.

Sometimes it's a photography class. Sometimes it's a middle schooler spending a day off school exploring somewhere new. Sometimes it's a photo walk with people you've never met. A birthday party. A gallery wall filled with photographs. A family creating together. Drinks and conversation over portfolios. A creative night out. A journey somewhere farther from home.

The format changes.

The purpose doesn't.

Create. Explore. Belong.

Story & Light Society is a community for people who want more of those things in their lives.

You don't need to call yourself an artist. You don't need an expensive camera. You don't need to already know anyone. And you certainly don't need to be “good at photography.”

You just need to be curious.

Come make something.
Come see something you haven't noticed before.
Come find your people.

Meet the Founder

Caitlin Maloney, M.Ed.
Founder · Photographer · Educator

Caitlin is a professional photographer and educator whose work has always lived at the intersection of creativity, learning, people, and place.

She has spent more than 15 years working as a professional photographer and holds a professional certificate in digital photography, along with a Masters Degree in Education. Her background also includes teaching and working with children—experiences that shaped her belief that some of the most meaningful learning happens through curiosity, exploration, and doing.

Story & Light brings those worlds together, growing from her belief that photography can be more than a profession or technical skill—it can give us a reason to go somewhere new, pay closer attention, create simply for the joy of it, and connect with people we might never have met otherwise.

She created Story & Light to make room for more of that—for kids and adults, beginners and photographers, families and friends, and anyone looking for a little more creativity, exploration, and genuine connection in their lives.

Photography is where the story began. Story & Light is where it gets to grow.
